The thought of another school year with masks has become a reality - at least in blue states. Red states, with Florida and Texas at the head of the line, are following their head lemming off a cliff of denial and disinformation by increasing their attacks on science, common sense, and compassion. Florida and Texas have actually made it illegal for school districts or local governments to issue mask mandates - apparently the rights of people and local governments only apply when serving the Dear Leader’s purpose. The “freedom” police apparently value ignorance over human life, which is an odd stance for the right-to-life party. Apparently some people consider their right to not wear a mask as an absolute, regardless of how their actions are detrimental to their friends, family, neighbors, towns, and country.
And then there are those who feel the need to compare vaccination cards with the Star of David or concentration camp tattoos. I suppose it’s possible that this can be attributed to ignorance of history in some cases, but certainly not in all. So why do otherwise intelligent, educated people use what they must know is an inappropriate and absurd analogy? Tribalism and partisanship - the need to diminish the perception that a Democratic administration’s policies are working for the entire country. Never mind that no one is being arrested or sent to a concentration camp for not getting vaccinated - or ever will. And to compare a policy that is intended to save lives to policies that led to millions of deaths is beyond insulting. People making those comparisons either need to do a better job of understanding history, or they should be ashamed of themselves.
